Universal Life Insurance in Irving
Universal life is permanent coverage that lets you adjust what you pay when your income shifts. We lay out how the premiums, the cash value and the monthly charges work together, so you know what the policy will do before you sign anything.
Universal Life in Plain Terms
This is lifelong coverage built around an account inside the policy. Coverage holds as long as that account has enough in it to pay the monthly charges. Your premiums go in, the insurer deducts the cost of insurance and its fees, and the remainder sits as cash value that earns interest.
People choose it for the flexibility. Inside the insurer's limits, you can pay in more during good stretches and less when money is tight. You can also raise or lower the amount your beneficiary would receive. That works well for people who want coverage beyond a 20 or 30 year term but whose earnings swing, like business owners or folks on commission.
The same flexibility carries a risk. Underpay for years and the policy can run out of money. We handle that the way we would for a neighbor: say it straight, put the numbers in front of you, and help you pick a funding level you can keep up.
What Our Help Covers
- Needs before numbers
- Our first questions are about the job this coverage has to do. Clear debts, replace a paycheck, leave money for your kids, or handle estate costs. Those answers decide the amount, not a quota.
When Universal Life May Fit
You want to stay covered into your 80s and 90s
Most term policies end long before then. If you want money ready for a spouse, a child with special needs or estate costs whenever you die, permanent coverage handles it.
Your earnings rise and fall
People who are self-employed or work on commission value paying in more during good months and less when money is short.
Whole life feels too rigid
Whole life fixes the premium in place. Universal life can often be arranged with a smaller required payment for the same lifelong coverage, particularly in a guaranteed version.
You have an older universal life policy
Lots of policies sold decades back counted on higher interest rates than insurers pay today. If you haven't checked yours in years, it could be underfunded and deserves a review.
Your term policy ends soon
Many term policies include a conversion option to lifelong coverage without a new health exam. That option expires, so we can look at yours while there's still time.
What Moves the Cost of Universal Life
Universal life has two prices to think about: what you choose to pay in, and what the policy charges each month. The charges are set by the insurer and depend mostly on you. We show both on paper so the price is never a mystery.
Age and health
The cost of insurance rises every year as you get older. Starting younger and healthier earns a better rating class and lower charges for the life of the policy.
Tobacco use
Smokers and other tobacco users pay much more. Some insurers offer a better class after you have been tobacco free for a set period.
Coverage amount
A larger amount for your beneficiary means larger monthly charges. We help you find the figure that does the job without overbuying.
Guarantees and cash value goals
A policy guaranteed to last to age 100 or beyond costs more to fund than one that relies on current interest rates. Building strong cash value also takes higher premiums.
Riders
Extras like waiver of premium or a child rider add a charge. Some are worth it, some are not, and we will tell you which.
How the Process Goes
- 1
A call to start
It begins on the phone. You share who relies on you, what you owe and earn, and what the policy has to do. Expect about half an hour, with nothing to sign.
- 2
Quotes and projections
We gather quotes from insurers suited to your age and health and review the illustrations together. You choose a funding level you're comfortable keeping up for years.
- 3
Applying and underwriting
You answer health questions, and many people also have a brief paramedical exam with blood work and blood pressure. The insurer checks your records and sets your rating class.
- 4
Reviewing the issued policy
When the policy is issued, we read it with you page by page. We confirm the beneficiaries and riders match your request, and we explain the free-look period, when you can still cancel.

Common Universal Life Questions
What sets universal life apart from whole life?
Whole life keeps the same premium forever, and its cash value grows on a fixed, guaranteed schedule. Universal life lets you change your payments and coverage amount, and its cash value grows with the rates the insurer credits each year. You get more flexibility and usually a lower required payment, with fewer guarantees unless you choose a guaranteed version. Our Whole Life Insurance page explains the other side.
Could my policy lapse?
Yes. When the cash value gets too low to pay the monthly charges, the insurer sends a notice and allows a grace period to pay. If you miss it, the policy ends. Guaranteed universal life removes that risk as long as each planned premium is paid in full and on time.
Is borrowing against the cash value allowed?
Generally yes, once enough cash value has built up, through a policy loan or partial withdrawal. Loans charge interest, and any balance left unpaid lowers what your beneficiary gets, so we review the impact with you first.
Should I be concerned about a universal life policy I bought long ago?
It's worth checking. Request an in-force illustration from your insurer, which shows how long the policy will last at current rates. We'll go through it with you and explain choices like paying higher premiums, reducing the coverage amount or looking at a new policy.
How long until I'm approved?
That varies with the insurer, the amount of coverage and your health history. Straightforward cases go quicker, while bigger policies or ones that need doctor records take longer. We update you as it moves and let you know what's slowing it down.
